About Irene

Therapy rooted
in connection

I'm Irene Shakhnis, an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) working with individuals and couples in Los Angeles and via telehealth across California.

I believe that most of what brings us into therapy — the anxiety, the disconnection, the patterns we can't seem to break — makes sense in context. My work is about understanding that context together, with care and without judgment.

Whether you're navigating a difficult life transition, working through something that happened long ago, or trying to find your way back to the person you love, I bring warmth, curiosity, and a willingness to be present for whatever you're carrying.

I completed my clinical training at the Southern California Counseling Center and hold an M.A. from Antioch University Los Angeles. I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Common Questions

Things you
might wonder

The first session is really a conversation — a chance for us to meet, for you to share what's brought you in, and for me to understand what you're hoping to get out of therapy. There's no pressure to share more than feels comfortable. We'll talk about your goals, what working together might look like, and whether the fit feels right.

I'm currently out-of-network with most insurance providers. Many plans offer out-of-network benefits that may cover a portion of our sessions. I'm happy to provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer. Please reach out directly to discuss fees and options.

Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes. Couples sessions may run 50–75 minutes depending on the work we're doing together.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, which tends to build the most momentum. Over time, we can adjust the frequency to what works best for you and where you are in the process.

Research consistently shows telehealth is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns. Many clients find it easier to fit into their schedule and feel just as — or more — at ease opening up from their own space. I offer both, and we can decide together what makes sense for you.

Reach out via the contact section below. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so we can get a sense of each other before committing to anything. I'll respond within one business day.
